A Prediction Market User Earned $436K on Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.
Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Grows
Politicians are growing concerned.
A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
