Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
